One of the longest and largest rivers in the Iberian Peninsula, the Duero has its source in the beautiful land of Soria, muse to some of the best of Machado’s poetry. The river runs through Burgos, home to one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in the world, the Cathedral of Burgos. It also traverses Zamora, known as the pearl of Duero, with its ancient Castle, its wealth of Romanic churches, including an incredible cathedral, and a Holy Week that you should not miss.
River Duero honors Valladolid, residence of the Castilian Kings during the Middle Age, and capital of the Spanish Empire until its final site in Madrid, and bathes Salamanca with its world famous University, founded in 1218.
And all through this feast of culture, history, architecture and art, the base pleasures are not forgotten. Castilian gastronomy is filling and succulent, and the wines of the region, “Ribera del Duero” are deemed a real gift to the connoisseurs: vineyards and wineries will reveal its secrets to the discerning visitor, who will enjoy a taste of heaven.
